How would you feel about being an occupant in the San Francisco City Hall after its renovation?

As an occupant, I will really feel great because the structure became a symbol of recovery of natural disaster by many people’s (24 teams of architectural, design, and engineering consultants for more than three years) help to renovate the City Hall. Moreover, the newly restored City Hall done by many re-used fixtures such as lighting to make the space has more proper lighting source than before which was a definite movement of consideration of occupants.

What types of lighting were discussed? How can these fixtures benefit the Chatham County City Hall?

According to the reading assignment articles, pendant fixture, clear tungsten-halogen lamp, indirect and lay-in fluorescent lighting, skylight, metal-halide lamp, incandescent light, light-emitting diodes (LED), and daylight are discussed. For the City Hall of Pittsboro, properly combined use of lighting would produce a better work and performing environment because people, who spend their most working hours with computer, need different use of lighting than gallery or performance area.

What seemed to be the largest dissatisfaction with office types and how may this affect the design of the Chatham County City Hall?

It is not easy to say which one is better because each person has own preference choosing office type. Moreover, it depends on the type of career and one’s personal preference. For example, if a job needs more verbal communication between co-workers, open-planed office would be proper. However, there is an opposite case. To design a proper office plans for the City Hall of Pittsboro, I think that there needs an effort to investigate for finding a well-balanced plan (open & cell).

Is the courthouse appropriate for a dominant daylighting system?

I would like to say yes. The structure has potential possibilities of dominant daylight system with humongous windows, but it depends on the designer’s choice whether keeping the possibility or not.

What are benefits of daylighting?

The benefits of daylighting would be found in economic aspect and health care aspect. For example, if a space has a good daylighting, the cost of electricity would be less than other space which does not at least during the day. For health care aspect, examples can be found from articles, according to the article “Enriching lighting design” written by Elizabeth C. Brawley, “Bright light exposure is essential for anyone but even more so for older adults, who as mobility decreases, so does their exposure to daylight(196).”

Do codes matter for lighting design? Yes,no, or maybe?

Yes, it does matter. Each structure has its particular design feature. For instance, it is easy to compare the different design between residential and commercial design which means the needs are different up to the space. Lighting design is one of the most important design features and the design needs to follow the codes to maximize the potential possibilities of design.

Is lighting subjective or objective?

In my opinion, lighting is both subjective and objective. There is an example from the article. Women liked less bright lighting than men. Moreover, this matter depends on the personal preference and the purpose (use) of the space. Let me suggest that the different light of a wine bar and a library.

How is the information presented applied to my programming document and design?

It will be applied in several ways to my programming document such as spatial planning (allocation), material choice, and so on.

Does Cooper Lighting offer indirect lighting?

Yes, the company offers indirect lighting.

High Rise is a rational architectural structure that is constructed by utilizing the vertical element rather than the horizontal element. It needs less territory than normal horizontal architectural structure; moreover, as stacking each unit vertically, it can help to save space for other purposes. For High Rise project, I designed each unit carefully with "Level of Scale" which means that I really focused on to divide each rooms based on the level of scale; for example, to design bedroom, I started to design the room from a king size mattress since people occupy their own interpersonal space within the fixed-feature space.
The location of site of High Rise project is at Greensboro downtown. This high-rise offers awesome view with its height. Also, this building works as a "Strong Center" of Greensboro downtown. It has easy access to downtown where has restaurants, theaters, parks, and so on. With this project, I focused on to provide a strong center within the residential space. For example, the gas vent less fireplace would be a center of public area and the bed would be a center of private area. A strong center is a place where people like to gather together. To satisfy this purpose, I deigned this unit with my own design sense to meet the goal of design what I have learned so far.
In the 21st century, nobody can live without "Boundaries" whether it is a visible one or invisible one. A person wears a cloth for various reasons such as protection, fashion, and so on. We do make a conversation and exchange thoughts each other, which is a way of building boundaries. An architectural structure also has boundaries. A bedroom is surrounding with walls, a residential unit is consisting of units, and a high rise unit is consisting of architecture structure. It was not an easy procedure to make visible boundaries within a vacant space. I designed each space where it meets the basic function of space; for example, the most common function of kitchen is cooking food.
When you about to go to the upper level, you will need to experience "Alternating repetition." If you take a staircase, there is a alternating repetition of stairs and the stairs are the positive space of the staircase. It is an architectural designer's task to make the staircase in a "Good shape." To divide the given floor plan of this project, I considered to use "Symmetry" to make a balanced space. There was a kind of obstacle that the ratio of human being is close to a rectangular ratio, but the given floor plan is consisted of four of 40' structural grids. In the process of design of this unit, I was assigned to design a staircase as well that is a "Deep interlock and ambiguity" space between a 3 bedroom unit and a 2 bedroom unit. I used "Contrast" as a sub-design concept for the staircase space where has "Gradient" at the stairs itself. The literal meaning of "'Echoes" and the abstractive meaning of "Echoes" bounce within the staircase space. I provided the "Void" more than previous projects. "It is the way that the intensity of every center depends on the existence of still place - an empty center- somewhere in its field (Christopher Alexander in The Nature of Order, 2001)." As an architectural designer, I use "Simplicity and inner calm" as my own design element throughout the project that I have been doing. For this project, I also designed the space with the simplicity with design gesture and the materials to create inner calm that has "Not separateness" which ties up each unit with similar design pattern.
I designed two units based on the consideration of human beings' lives at Downtown area where providing urban high life than rural areas.

Whenever I think about "sustainability" for my project, I am used to consider how to use a kind of sustainable material to the space where I design to satisfy the goal of "sustainability." However, the designer of this house seems like to be approached from a broader perspective of "sustainability" because according to the information what I have got for this house, "LLC was called upon by Preservation Greensboro Development Fund to renovate a home, more than 100 years old, which had been slated for demolition. Moved to a new site, the house was saved from ruin, and transformed into a wonderful dwelling for future generations to enjoy. Many of the unique details of the house were preserved or copied from the original." It has benefits, but the details need to be more considered such as replacing the old door knob and installing range hood.

"Our goal for this project was to add a full second story to this already beautiful on2-story home in Old Irving Park. Nestled on a cul-de-sac it provides great views of the Greensboro Country Club Golf Course. This huge second story addition includes a new master suite with a marble bath, a new guest suite, a dramatic stairway, and a spacious library with a walk-out terrace overlooking the golf course. The clients were able to remain in the home during the entire construction process and great care was taken to minimize the impact to their lives. Temporary stairs were added in the front and back to allow access into the home during the remodel without entering the main level. Originally scheduled for the 2011 Tour of Remodeled Homes, detailed planning and swift execution allowed this remodel to be completed in only three months - just in time for the 2010 Tour of Remodeled Homes!" This unit has some careless points such as the lack of thinking of circulation within the kitchen space and the use of same wall paper for the bathroom switch cover. For the second floor, a concept was given with the color treatment.

"The goal for this project was to create a new side entry for the family and guests. Having a front entry located some distance away from the circle drive was not convenient for every day traffic. The only existing entrance was through the garage which required the overhead door to be open. The task for Acorn Construction and our team of subcontractors was to take an existing bedroom and bath to create a new entrance, smaller bedroom with adjoining full bath and new powder room. On the exterior, we removed a window and replaced it with a new custom door, added new brick steps with covered porch (featuring a copper roof). The new entrance hall includes beaded wainscot and built in cabinets which were designed or coats, storage and include bench seating areas. The new powder room has the look and feel of an old style bath, featuring a pedestal sink, built-in wooden medicine cabinet and beaded wainscot throughout. With the help of our great subcontractors, designers and homeowners, Acorn Construction finished another beautiful and functional project."

The size of home is getting smaller and this unit shows that. This unit has cathedral ceiling in master bedroom, garden tub with 3 walls in master bathroom, double vanity in master bath, and marble sinks in bathroom. With simple floor plan, it offers easy accessibility.

This unit has coffered and trey ceilings, 10' and 12' ceilings, round sunroom and master sitting, 2 story covered porches, casement windows throughout, stamped concrete, and epoxy floors in rec room.
With 8' tall doors, it gives some sense of "scale" within a space since I felt very comfortable, but I think it does not work for everyone.

With this experience, I could see real examples of pros. and cons. of design. Moreover, I experienced that it is very important to think about the aspect of ergonomic design for people. Bungalow is a common residential structure for middle class Americans with clean lines, modest space, and simple space. The main goal of this project was to provide a new bungalow style which cooperate with deeper design consideration. Since this project is about to re-design dining room including the characteristic of bungalow and decorate the dining room based on sensory properties of building materials in the dining room of a bungalow. The concept of this dining room is "dialogue" which people use as a well-known tool to interact, communicate, and make a relationship each other. This project was about to provide a sense of communication between a space and people. As re-designing this dining room, I wanted to express a sense of "dialogue" along with human-environmental relationship and the given square shape space. The dining table is the main design feature which shows "dialogue" between the room itself and the purpose of the dining room. As well as, the dining table, which shows off the new way of storage, usage of space, and maximize the basic use of dining room, is embracing a sideboard and a hutch within the structure to show the new 21st century bungalow style. From the perspective of sustainability, various materials did not be used in this space. Moreover, along the new style of design will be able to offer a new way of using the space.

With deeper design consideration, I introduced a DIALOGUE between past and present through a single, fluid moment – opening the opportunity for conversation among people gathered at table. By centralizing all the functional of the program elements – a table, seating, a sideboard, a hutch – into a single design gesture, I suggest a new bungalow style as appropriate for this century, as the original style to the nineteenth century. By changing the perception and use of the space through contrasting materials, a neutral color scheme, and the unity of foam, I offer a different means to use and understand the space. Bringing the universal to bear in this site specific design, past and present harmonize through contrast.

This home was lack of consideration of circulation in the kitchen area; for example, there was no space around built-in double oven area and built-in microwave was in the island which we usually need space to put on hot things from microwave. Along with the unbelievable technology improvement, human beings' daily lives become easier, more convenient, and so on. For example, through emails, we can communicate each other faster and easier. Moreover, according to the article "Computing in Architectural Design" written by Yehuda Kalay, as time goes by, the importance of computation in architectural design has been increased "finding the most appropriate geometric relationships between the components of a building." Computer-aided design has been developed from sketchpad to CAD systems. Along with this development, expressing geometric shapes in architectural design became easier and possible. In addition, computers as design tools made communication quickly and efficiently to share information through the Internet between members of a design team. The industry of electronics such as computer producing companies became possibly to develop software for the architectural design field. These efforts opened more possibilities to create better designs. Even though the development of technology made design process easier, the main "CPU" of design process is a person who is operating the computer.

What does make me really happy as a person who is dealing with designing things?

It was really awesome chance to think about what I am doing in the U.S. to be an architectural designer.

I decided to study in America since my heart told me that "Young, it will be the first step to be a

person who does what I really want to do." and I think I am doing okay even if I am not a very

Above image is my hometown baseball team's bseball stadium where I feel "happy" whenever I get there. I took this picture last year when I visited my home country. Even though they are not ranked in high ranking, I still love my team. :D It inspires me to have more energy to work on, feel better, and makes me feel alive. Also, this stadium's nickname is the world largest KARAOKE because every fans sing the team song all day long until the day ends.

I took above image a few years ago in my home country. Whenever I visit my home country, it makes me feel that there is at least one thing what I can do to improve it. Also, it reminds me my dream.

I write about Tracey Wright's design strengths. "All I ever wanted to do was make things with my hands." I think that it is a good way to approach with hands to make things because it gives her actual aspect of a design which cannot be seen or concerned before using hands. There is an idiom in Korea which says that a person who knows a lot is not better than a person who loves it. And a person who loves is not better than a person who enjoys it. As this idiom says, I believe Tracey has the strongest strength as a designer which is her passion. As a classmate of Tracey, I have been seeing her passion through her works especially marker renderings which encourage me to do more for better works. My design strength is that I have two different cultural backgrounds which are Korean and American cultural background. It helps me to understand a particular thing in two ways based on my various cultural background. For example, when I think about the floor material, carpet does not come to first in my mind because I have ever since carpet as a floor material before I come to America. With these two different cultural backgrounds, I believe that I can design more powerful and more unique things even though I have not designed any greater things so far. However, as I am studying and experimenting, I will be able to design at least one memorable design in my entire life. Part one

Ground Floor- by Ino and David
it has laundry, mud room, lounge, mail center, and community garden outside.
Its overall atmosphere was very warm and welcoming both the residents and the visitors. There is a visible walls which provide more open sight. Its cozy lobby area was very impressive. They successfully designed layout which embraces entire floor together with a concept. Moreover, outside garden area also impressive which considers the residents lives.

1st Floor- by Kalani, Chares, and kelsey
It has office, reception, lounge, convenience store, and the cafe.
They mixed two mood which was the vintage and the modern. the 1st floor had more like residential mood which is good I think. They manipulated two different ceiling materials which divide areas rather than using partition walls to divide spaces.

2nd Floor- by Jeff and Felicia
They designed gym, multi-purpose room, conference room, lounge, and child care center.
I like their overall of sculptural shape layout which provides smooth and comfortable feeling. Their track around gym was good idea, but since it is narrow wide, people need to care about others who is running in the track.

A concept is always a process. Although our original concept statement worked around the essence of a butterfly, we began to take inspiration from the butterfly to further our design. We worked with the forms of nature and organic shapes. We designed the spaces to give off the feeling of embracive and fluidity. These two words played a huge part in our decisions and help explain our design.

The Occupants' Experience with the 2nd Floor of the Unity Village

Within the space which has computer lab, library, kids’ playground, instructional room, gym, and medical clinic, 72 years old male with wheelchair can be protected from a emergency situation and he can easily access to the Internet world without any barriers. Then, 6 years old boy will enjoy his time in the kids’ area and will face the world of excitement of reading by the kids’ bookshelf. Finally, 42 years old female who works at this place can take her time for workout at the gym after her work without paying extra money which help to pay more money for her children.

What does Design Thinking mean to me?
To me, Design Thinking means how to create and design something with acceptable elements because a creative design is not always acceptable. In order to accomplish this, there will be several steps such as precedent, inspiration, and so on. In other words, design thinking is about entire process from the beginning to the end.

How am I using Design Thinking in my current project and future project?
For the Unity Village project, I use Design Thinking based on my personal experience which reminds me the first impression of America because one of the clients of this project is immigrants who will feel like me. With my personal experience, I am using above mentioned process for this project.
As an architectural design student, whenever I have been asked to do a project, there should be a design problem that I should find and show the design solution by my work with design thinking.
Moreover, to design a better one, I will design on the side of my clients to understand their environment.

Design concept is to solve design problem.

The essence of this design is based around the shapes, colors, development and interaction with environment of a butterfly.

This relates to the residence because they are of all ages and from different places, just as butterflies have a distinct life progression and are seen throughout the world. Also, within this space we hope to develop a scene of interaction with the environment. Butterflies play a key part in the environment by pollinating plants. This space will consist of organic shapes and forms from nature that embrace the residences. Overall, the inspiration from this design has evolved from a butterfly.

On Monday, 15th February, 2010, I visited My Sister's House which is built by Interior Architecture students for the Urban Studio project.

I started to observe the house through the viewfinder rather than my eyes. It was very impressive opportunity because Iarc students did it for five teenage moms to contribute something to the society as an architectural designer. Overall, the house had a modern look and a good combination of colors. The style of the design is very close to my own way of design.
I finally saw a real design that I can do someday as an architectural designer and I really hope that there will be another opportunity for me before graduation.:]

The use of natural light was the biggest part which grabbed my attention.

Moreover, the consideration of harmony between the man-made structure and the nature was also very impressive.

It was a very awesome chance to me...

People used to misunderstand that human beings are the most dominant creature on this planet, but it is not always true because when we face natural disaster such as flooding, earthquake, and so on, there are not many things we can do to control it. Along with this thought in the class, we have discussed the that hit Haiti and took away a lot of important things from human beings. Along with this disaster issue, we talked about our contributions to the world as designers in class. As we are designers, there will be at least one thing we can contribute to the world as designing something for human beings. Therefore, my first project has started to find out what can I do to contribute something to society as a designer. Now, the most important thing is to provide space where people can stay and cure their damaged heart in Haiti. Along with this matter, I was assigned to build a shelter with Brittany Stiles, Meghan Kaufmann, and Shane Jones for UNCG faculty and students. The shelter needed to be tested by the aspect of sleeping. I had to design a shelter by using only five found objects and two binding materials.

As usual, I spent a lot of time for brainstorming to make strong connections between my idea and the real structure. Since I had to build a shelter with five found objects, I started to think about an inspiration to make the entire process easier. And then, I started to think about the well-known structure for sleeping. For example, when you think the chair, there would be a standard shape of chair which fits human body well. Since it is about building a makeshift shelter with five found objects, there were more difficulties than in the usual design process. I came up with a peapod as an inspiration. I thought about the structure, which needs to provide comfortable and sufficient space for at least one person. A peapod embraces more than one bean. I thought that its curvy shape provides smoother overall shape to make the occupant feels comfortable in and out.

Before I start working on building the actual structure, I had to find five objects to make shelter; therefore, I got PVC pipes, cardboard, plastic, and sponge. The actual design process was started after I got an inspiration, which is the peapod. I worked with making an actual structure with PVC pipes. At first, I started to join pipes with duck tape and connected each pipe columns with wires, but the pipe columns were not strong enough to stand against wire. Therefore, I got rid of all wires. I covered all pipes with cardboard again and covered all pipes with strings over the cardboard. String covered pipes make a better interior atmosphere.

Then, I made three parts such as two walls, roof, and floor. I considered that it needed to be waterproof, acoustic, and keeping warm since it is a shelter for sleeping. I located plastic between cardboards to make waterproof walls. I made a bubble wrap door on one side of a wall to control the natural light. Before that, there was an idea to make a skylight on the roof, but the idea was removed because I thought the door was enough to control the natural light. And then, I was thinking about the roof part and the floor part to make it smooth since the inspiration was peapod. Therefore, I decided to make the roof and the floor in a curvy shape. We inserted boosters under the top layer of floor to make the curvy shape and to provide more comfortable floor for the occupant. Duck tape was used as a primary binding material and string was used as secondary binding material.

After constructing of the actual structure, we had to make a graphic to help the audience understand our shelter. In my opinion, this is more important than the entire design process because most audiences do not have enough understanding about the field of design. In other words, the designer should be able to persuade a client with professional design knowledge. The size for the graphic was 18" by 24', but we could adjust it. The graphic needed to include the entire process such as inspiration, process sketching, process photos, material board, and summary of team process.

To sum up, I was fortunately placed in a group with awesome group members. Since I started to work on this project, I thought about what I can contribute for my group so I took up a positive attitude during the entire design process. The strongest part among the entire processes was great teamwork so I could make it work. In the middle of the process, I doubted whether we could complete our project or not. However, based on the great teamwork, we did make it successfully. I wondered that what kind of outcome we could produce with these found objects because it was the first attempt to make a thing with five found objects. In addition, without using many tools to build it, I found out that the most functional tool is my hands. Whenever I am about to design or build something, I used to think about the materials first because I believed that better materials produce better outcomes. However, at least for this project, I learned that better quality of materials do not always produce better quality of outcomes. Throughout the entire design process, there were a lot of big and small mistakes, but it led to the better outcomes finally. The most important thing that I have learned throughout this project is there is at least one thing that I can contribute to the society for people, who are having sorrow, is building a shelter to cure their broken heart at least.

As a quote “Individuals cannot be studied without considering the multiple ecological systems in which they operate (116)” states, a structure or a design need to be harmonized with its surrounding environments. Before reading this article, I have been thought as an architectural designer, I only need to design a space or a structure, but it is not right. There are complicated relationships between neighborhood and community. Community consists of physical, place-based, and social, people-based housing issues. In other words, it is not simple to study neighborhoods and communities because even though there is a well-designed house, it cannot exist by itself. The neighborhoods mean geographic location and the communities mean social interaction.
There are several theories to study the social aspects such as social contagion theories, collective socialization theories, neighborhood resource theories, and relative deprivation theories. As the Korean proverb says, "a mother moved around a lot to offer her son better surrounding environments." These theories are emphasizing the importance of harmony of people and their surrounding environments.
The physical community development includes planning commissions and comprehensive plan. The planning commissions are the force to define a character of local area and the comprehensive plan is about land use and zoning. Also, there are tools to make physical community development easier and effectively such as zoning ordinances, appeal process, subdivision regulations, and so on. In other words, there are some restrictions to build a house and a community such as the limit of material and the way of organizing community.
The neighborhood satisfaction combines personal factors, physical factors, social factors, neighborhood segregation, and safety factors. These factors work as the critical elements. Let us suppose that there is a community which is consist of several awesome houses, but this community does not satisfy the critical elements. Would you like to live in this community?
As mentioned categories above, there will be more points to be duly considered after finishing the design process. It is necessary to cooperate with a design itself and its given surroundings to fulfill the designer's duties.

• Located on the coast of Izola, Slovenia. This seaside structure appeals to young, small families and couples.
• There was increased need for small, affordable housing for these young families.
• Constructed for low-income residency.
• The concept of a rhythmic beehive was an attempt to foster community by paralleling the drive of worker bees in the hive, but was unsuccessful.
• The Honeycomb Housing Complex brings together people of similar backgrounds, and social and economic standing in one building, but gives them no reason to interact or form a community.
• The staggered elevations of the balconies is successful for creating private space between neighbors.

About Maritime Youth House

• Scandinavian architecture has been one that increases its program for years. The architects continually try to combine many public places into one functional whole.
• This architecture focuses on form and functionality, and inspiration.
• The Maritime Youth House was a special challenge because it was essential that the space focused on two clients: a sailing club and a Children’s center.
• Some important programming issues were giving the children enough safe space to play and also allowing mooring space for the boats.
• Another issue was the site. The site of the construction was riddled with polluted topsoil, which the architects ingeniously decided to build over.
• The architects decided to build a large, elevated wooden deck over the contaminated land, allowing a sprawling space for the children to play and openings underneath for the boats to moor.
• The gently sloping deck fosters community by allowing a great space for the children and center supervisors to interact.
• Indirectly, the space allows sailing club members to interact with the Youth House as well by keeping them connected.
• The fascinating deck serves as the focal point of the project. It is unexpected, inviting, and draws many people to come enjoy the space together.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to know what would be happened in our daily life since earthquake hit Haiti and people lost lots of human lives. Along with, to build or create a shelter with limited given materials are necessary process for a designer because as I have been through, I was only allowed to use sustainable materials to design kitchen. Moreover, as we build structure, we can learn that how structure works together. As building a makeshift shelter, we can experience difficulties with given limited materials.
As a designer, there is a more than one thing that I can contribute to the world.

The occupant of this makeshift shelter has lost everything because of the environmental disaster called “unbelievable.” Therefore, he decided to build a structure where he can sleep. Since the weather is warm in his region year round, he thought that the structure needed to offer a space where he can avoid dew during the night time. Since “unbelievable” destroyed everything, he did not have any electricity so he built a structure that was dark, strong, conforming, and linear. He centered his efforts on building a sleeping space. He would start his new life in this structure, which only had the functional aspect of sleeping. As time goes by, he would be able to invent more things after he became accustomed with this structure.
